Safety tips for record heat

The American Red Cross encourages all Granite Staters to follow best practices for this week’s heat wave by following some of the tips and guidelines listed below. More information is available at NHRedCross.org and visitors are invited to review the “Heat Wave Safety Checklist.”

n Listen to the NOAA Weather Radio for critical updates from the National Weather Service.

n Do not leave children or pets alone in enclosed, parked vehicles.

n Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids, even if you do not feel thirsty. Avoid drinks with alcohol or caffeine which could worsen hydration levels.

n Eat small meals more regularly.

n Wear loose-fitting, lightweight and light-colored clothing. Dark colors absorb the sun’s rays.

n Avoid excessive exercise, slow down, and stay indoors.

n Postpone outdoor games and activities.

n Use a buddy system when working in excessive heat and take breaks often.

n Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, who spend much of their time alone, or who are more likely to be affected by the heat.

n Check on your animals frequently to ensure they are not suffering the heat.
